Covalent Bonding Ms. Cook

Covalent Bonds The electrons are shared between the atoms for each to reach an octet. A molecule is a neutral group of atoms joined together with these bonds. When two atoms of the same element are covalently bonded, diatomic molecules are produced

The Seven Diatomic Elements diatomic: two atoms They start at element number 7 and they make the shape of a 7. N2N2 O2O2 F2F2 Cl 2 I2I2 Br 2 H2H2 Learn these, they are important! Neither element wants to give up electrons so they end up sharing so they both have a stable octet.

Molecular Compounds A compound composed of molecules. The molecules of a molecular compound are all the same. These molecules tend to have lower melting and higher boiling points than ionic compounds.

Molecular Formula Shows how many atoms of each element a molecule contains. Example: NH 3 – Has 1 Nitrogen and 3 Hydrogens C 2 H 6 – Has 2 Carbons and 6 Hydrogens
