Learning Target: Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties. Must Do: Gather into groups of ~4. Use iPads to Google and read about Single and Double Replacement Reactions. Write down an example reaction for each. These can be balanced or unbalanced, but be prepared to comment and possibly balance the reactions ! 10 th Grade Chemistry: 2/19/14 Agenda: Must Do WWK Brief Lesson/video Formative assessment Exit ticket….

Exothermic exothermic ( ˌɛ ksə ʊˈ θ ɜː m ɪ k) or exothermaladj1. (Chemistry) (of a chemical reaction or compound) occurring or formed with the evolution of heat.

Elements that Exist (primarily) as Diatomic molecules (need to know this to write a correct chemical formula) One way to remember the seven diatomic elements is to start at element 7 (nitrogen) on the periodic table, and trace a "7" (move right to fluorine and then down to iodine). Counting the elements in the “7” shape, you will find six elements. The seventh is hydrogen—it is way up in the top left-hand corner of the periodic table. Another way to remember the diatomic elements is that they all end in either -ine (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine) or -gen (hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen). For the polyatomic elements, you may find it helpful to remember that phosphorus and sulfur are found beneath the top part of the “7” shape.

Goal for this unit Write a complete and balanced chemical equation from a prompt Example: Write the chemical equation for the reaction of Aluminum metal with Potassium Perchlorate to form Aluminum Oxide and Potassium Chloride Simple Chemical Equation
6
Balanced? Write a complete and balanced chemical equation from a prompt Example: Write the chemical equation for the reaction of Aluminum metal with Potassium Perchlorate to form Aluminum Oxide and Potassium Chloride KClO 4 + Al → Al 2 O 3 + KCl
7
Type of Reaction? Write a complete and balanced chemical equation from a prompt Example: Write the chemical equation for the reaction of Aluminum metal with Potassium Perchlorate to form Aluminum Oxide and Potassium Chloride KClO 4 + Al → Al 2 O 3 + KCl

Meeting part of the Learning Target Here’s the tie-in to the last month that you’ve all been waiting for… See if you can predict the products of this reaction CuO (s) + Al (s)
10
Yes! It’s a single replacement ReDox reaction! 3 CuO + 2 Al → 3 Cu + Al 2 O 3 This is know as a “thermitic” reaction. You should also recognize that it goes along with what we know from batteries…Cu wants electrons and Al will gladly give it’s electrons away. Thermite is a general mixture of a solid metal fuel and an oxidizer. Used for cutting and fusing metals.
