Introduction to Quotation Integration Presented by: Mrs. Davis

Why do we integrate quotations?  Adds fluency to our writing (Why is this important?)  Adds credibility to our writing (Why is this important?)  Assists in proving our thesis or claim (Why is this important?)  Can you think of other reasons?

Basic Quotation Integration  Quoted material at the beginning; writer’s words at the end  Example: “She always felt the center of her heart go hard” demonstrates how Mrs. Wilmot appears a loving mother to the rest of the world, while inwardly feeling little for her children (120).

Basic Quotation Integration  Writer’s words at the beginning; quoted material at the end  Example: Even though Mrs. Wilmot appears to love her children to the rest of the world, “when her children were present, she always felt the center of her heart go hard,” (120).

Basic Quotation Integration  Quoted material in the middle of writer’s words  Example: Mrs. Wilmot “always felt the center of her heart go hard” when her children were present, but to the rest of the world, she appeared a loving mother.

Let’s Practice!  Idea: Doodle is a sick individual.  Quotation: “The doctor said that he mustn’t get too excited, too hot, too cold, or too tired, and that he must always be treated gently.”  Combine the above idea and quotation into one sentence using each of the three types of basic quotation integration.

Further Practice  The state of the economy is desperate. “Millions of jobs are being lost every day - we’re in real pain here,” (36).  The economy is looking much brighter. “Millions of new jobs are emerging. Things are really on the upswing,” (415).

Even Further Practice  It is more important than ever for Americans to forge a common identity. “We need an identity that binds us together,” (25).  Animal rights represent the next stage in human moral development. “If we don’t change our ways, future generations will judge us harshly. We need to achieve a higher state of consciousness and empathy,” (1025).
