4  Born near Hodgenville, Kentucky.  Came in the world on February 12, 1809.  Family was poor and uneducated.  Moved to Indiana at age 7.  Mother died at age 9  Self taught himself

5  Stayed stable with manual labor work.  Moved to Illinois.  Became part of state government.  Became very well known for his wit and integrity.  Married

6  Self-studied law by borrowing books from attorney.  Got his license in 1836.  Became one of the most able lawyers in Illinois.

7  Elected into the House of Representatives in 1847.  Moved to Republican Party in 1856.  Ran for Senate against Stephan A. Douglas. Lost, but gained national attention.

8  1860, the Republicans nominate him for presidential candidate.  Won the election. Cost the United States ten states due to secession.  This began the Civil War.

9  Began with the attack on Fort Sumter.  Southern Blockade- blocking of southern ports for trade.  Emancipation Proclamation- announcement of free slaves.

10  Gettysburg Address  Led the war, but kept his loyalty to what he campaigned on.

11  While attending a theatre he was assassinated.  His death was a terrible thing as it killed a man of great deeds.

12  Kept a nation intact during a Civil War.  Freed slaves and made the nation into a stronger one.

15  Tom Osborne was born on February 23, 1937.  Grew up in Hastings, Ne.  Was a star athlete while growing up.

16  Star athlete in multiple sports in high school.  Won state in the discus for track.  Athlete of the year by Omaha World Herald his senior year.

17 Stayed in town and attended Hastings College. Star athlete here in basketball and football. Awarded he Nebraska College Athlete of the Year. Only athlete to win both high school and college award.

18 Osborne was drafted by the Redskins to play in the NFL. He played to seasons with the Redskins and one with the 49ers. Got a doctorate in educational psychology from the Univ. of Nebraska.

19  First job was as an unpaid offensive assistant in 1964.  Head coach at this time was Bob Devaney.  In 1969, he was named the offensive coordinator.

20 Overhauled the offense. Was part of the 1970 National Championship team. Also part of the 1971 National Championship. !972, Devenay announces his retirement after the season.

21  Osborne was really close to Devaney as a coaching assistant.  At the time of his retirement Devaney announced Osborne as his successor.

22  In his first year Osborne went 9-2-1.  Osborne’s career coaching record was 255-49-3.  He won 3 National Championships.  Had a five year record of 60-3.

23  Created a program for kids to walk-on and try for the team.  This program enabled the program to get players that weren’t highly prospected and make great players from them.

24  Osborne took pride in having a relationship with all his team players.  They would look up upon him to help with their own situations.  Ex.- Lawrence Phillips

25  Osborne always won nine or more games in every season.  Finished in the top 15 every year except one. 24 out of 25.

26  Announced he would retire in the 1997 season.  Frank Solich was to be his successor.

27  After retiring Osborne went into politics.  He ran and won vote for the House of Representatives in 2000.  Always was looking after Nebraska.

28  In 2007, the Husker Nation suffered it’s worst season in 40 years.  Coach Bill Callahan was under a lot of pressure as the Husker Nation was in fury of the terrible season.

29  After the firing of Steve Pederson, Osborne was brought back to the University as the Athletic Director.  He then fired Bill Callahan and brought Bo Pelini in.
