Leaders in the Making Teamwork – Lesson 5 Selfless
2
Consider this... We’re here on earth to do good for others. What the others are here for, I don’t know. W.H. Auden

Review Complete these sentences. 1.The selfless person... 2.The selfless person... 3.The selfless person... 4.The selfless person...

Going Deep You have been given a Zip-Loc snack bag with several M & M’s in it. NO, you may not eat them... yet. Keep your bag out in front of you. The point of this is to help each of us to realize that we ALL have faults and areas of weakness in which we need to work. Remember, good character comes with practice. Dedicate yourself to developing good character. Choose to work on it; good character won’t just happen. Being selfless is one of the hardest traits to master.
5
Going Deep As we move around the circle, if you have a red M & M in your bag, tell us one way that you are selfish. For each blue M & M that you have tell us one negative thing that someone has said about you. For each yellow M & M that you have tell us one bad habit that you possess. For each green M & M in your bag tell us one weakness that you have. For each brown M & M in your bag tell us one character trait that you need to work on. If you have an orange M & M in your bag tell us one person in your life who thinks you are not worth the air you breathe.
6
So What? – Journal #6 Date your journal. In your journal, admit to a personal weakness. Once you’ve identified your weakness, document HOW you are going to work on it. What specifically do you need to work on to become stronger, better, or more proficient in that area?
7
Practice Being Selfless Now, for each red M & M that is in your bag, give away a word of positive encouragement to someone who looks like they need it. For each blue M & M that is in your bag, write a positive note to someone AND give it to them. For each yellow M & M in your bag, complete one specific activity to counteract your bad habit. For example, if you talk out in class because you lack self-control, deliberately sit in class and watch the clock and do not blurt out for fifteen minutes. For each green M & M that is in your bag, spend two to five minutes talking with someone who looks like they need someone to talk to.

Practice Makes Perfect For each brown M & M that is in your bag, complete a Random Act of Kindness. For each orange M & M that is in your bag, do something that needs to be done without being asked or receiving recognition. Get all these things done before we meet again. When you finish all the tasks, the M & M’s are yours to eat. While you are practicing selflessness, gather a note describing what you did from three of the people you served. Have them date and sign the note. Come next time ready to share how people responded to your selflessness.
9
Journal #7 Date your journal. Write about today’s M & M sharing time. What did you discover about yourself? What acts of kindness or selfless acts did you perform? What were people’s responses? Then, what about being intentional? Are you still working on something? If yes, what are you working on and how are you working on it? If no, why aren’t you?

Think about it... From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. George H.W. Bush
