3 What is an emotional/personal bank account?
-Emotional Bank Account- An imaginary record of how you feel about yourself. It is like a bank account. -You can make DEPOSITS into or WITHDRAWALS from your personal/emotional bank account by the things you think, say and do. -The goal is to have more deposits than withdrawals. The more deposits the better you feel about yourself and the better your relationships with others will be.

4 What are “deposits” and “withdrawals” to the account?
All relationships have a kind of imaginary “emotional bank account.” When you do something to make another person feel good about the relationship, you make a deposit in their emotional bank account. When there is conflict, the relationship feels less positive. At least one person, and sometimes both people, feels a little less connected to the other. Then we would say that you made a withdrawal from the emotional bank account. As long as the overall total, or “balance,” of your account is positive over time, you will probably feel close, or connected, to the other people.

6 Keisha’s Story Read a story about Keisha and her mother.
Place a circle around all of the deposits throughout the story. Place a line through all of the withdrawals.

Answer the questions about Keisha’s story on your handout. Begin thinking about ways you can improve your Personal Bank Account (PBA).

8 Symptoms of Poor or Unhealthy PBA’s
You cave in to peer pressure easily. You wrestle with feelings of depression and feeling unimportant. You’re overly concerned about what others think of you. You act arrogant to help hide your insecurities. You self-destruct by getting heavily into drugs, pornography, vandalism or gangs. You get jealous easily, especially when someone close to you succeeds.

9 Possible Symptoms of Healthy PBA’s
You stand up for yourself and resist peer pressure. You’re not overly concerned about being popular. You see life as a generally positive experience. You trust yourself. You are goal driven. You are happy for the successes of others.
