Residential Water Use Each person in U.S. uses about 80 gallons/day Water is treated before used in home: – Removes smells, pathogens, and toxic elements – Draw and label 6 steps on page 276-277 – Which step removes smell? – What is alum for? – What is chlorination? – What’s used in filter steps?

Industrial Water Use 19% of water in world used Makes products, makes power, cools down Heated water reduces oxygen in water, causing fish kills

Agricultural water use 67% of water used in world 80% of sprayed water evaporates Drip, ditches, & flooding also used

Water Management Build dam, making a reservoir Aqueducts and canals divert water where needed

Water Conservation In agriculture—by using drip irrigation In industry—recycling water At home – use less water – Install low-flow shower heads, toilets, and appliances – Use local plants (xeriscaping)

Solutions for the Future Desalination – Removes salt from sea water – Expensive process and needs lots of energy Transporting Water – Ships tow icebergs
