Minerals and Rocks Unit Week 17 Directions 1.Prepare your desk for science. Put your signed test face down on top of your desk 2.Use voice level 0 (no voice) to look at notebook pg. 48 - 50 and prepare for the quiz.
2
Targets & Warm Up Targets: Students will use physical properties to identify minerals. Students will discover what sedimentary rock is and how it is formed. Warm Up: Review yesterday’s lesson
4
Physical vs. Chemical Properties To identify a mineral, scientists test some of its physical properties. A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance A chemical property is a characteristic of a material that become evident when the material undergoes a chemical reaction or chemical change.
5
The Acid Test What is the acid test? You can test minerals by putting a small amount of acid on a mineral that you are trying to identify. Minerals that have calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) will react when an acid is added to it. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is released and the mineral fizzes. What the acid test tells us: If the mineral fizzes, then the mineral contains calcium carbonate. If the mineral does not fizz, then the mineral does not contain calcium carbonate.

The Acid Test Minerals that react to acid CaCO 3 = calcium carbonate

Table of Contents DateTitlePage Sedimentary Rock51 Once you are finished with the Table of Contents, go to page 51 and add the title and date to the top of the page.
9
Sedimentary Rock Your task Read textbook pg. 242 – 243 out loud with your table group. Work together to answer the questions in your science notebook. If you finish early, you may silently read about fossils on pg. 244-245.
10
Sedimentary Rock Questions 1.What is sediment? 2.How does sedimentary rock form? 3.What sedimentary rock is made of skeletons and shells of sea animals? 4.What sedimentary rock is made up of small pieces of quartz? 5.What sedimentary rock is formed in lakes or oceans? 6.Briefly explain how rocks change into soil.
11
Reflection Questions What is sedimentary rock? How is sedimentary rock formed? How do you think can scientists use sedimentary rocks to learn about the past?
12
Targets (Revisited) Targets: Students will use physical properties to identify minerals. Students will discover what sedimentary rock is and how it is formed.
