Math Math Communication January 21, 2010 ESU#3 Facilitated by: Pam Krambeck and Debbie Schraeder

“ This is a story about the big public conversation the nation is not having about education… whether an entire generation of kids will fail to make the grade in the global economy because they can’t think their way through abstract problems, work in teams, distinguish good information from bad, or speak a language other than English.” How to Build a Student for the 21 st Century TIME Magazine; December 18, 2006 Why 21st Century Skills?

What is the Framework for 21 st Century Skills? http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/

Focusing on the content area of math, a scope and sequence literacy map from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills will be shared along with ideas for integrating 21st Century Skills into the math curriculum. A lesson from the curriculum map will be shared and demonstrated.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy Map

Learning Skills  Information and Media Literacy  Communication Skills  Critical Thinking and Systems Thinking  Problem Identification, Formulation and Solution  Creativity and Intellectual Curiosity  Interpersonal and Collaborative Skills  Self-Direction  Accountability and Adaptability  Social Responsibility

Math Standards Update State Board Approved – October 8, 2009 Districts must adopt within one year December 2009 and October, 2010 http://www.nde.state.ne.us/ndestandards/AcademicStandards.ht m http://www.nde.state.ne.us/ndestandards/AcademicStandards.ht m March 29-April 30 NeSA AA-Mathematics (Field Test) (77% of the students will be field testing)

What do we know about NeSA-M? Four concepts will be measured: number sense geometric/measurement algebraic data analysis/probability Two sessions, 48-60 multiple choice items No calculators, but common reference sheet provided. (Student IEP may allow) No student results provided – field testing the items. Math Table of Specifications: http://www.nde.state.ne.us/assessment/index.html

Common Core Standards  National discussion  July 1 st draft – High School only  January – elementary grades added  Implications?  Assessment to follow – “Race to the Top” grants

Graduation Requirements

What do the New Graduation Requirements mean? By 2015 (this year’s 7 th graders) students will need to graduate with the new requirements. NOT courses, but concepts. Rule 10 language will change. (Target date January 2010)

Online Documents www.nde.state.ne.us/Assessment Two New Practice Tests – Math and Reading by January 15 th. The reading test will have new accommodations –DAC will get access. DAC will assign to students who need magnifier and color contrast. Tables of Specifications – Performance Level Descriptors NeSA Approved Accommodations Alternate Assessment – Extended standards document

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy Map Match the Activities

Windowpane Processing 1.In grade level groups K-4, 5-8, and 9-12; review each of the learning skills for your corresponding grade level and list any implementation ideas on a sticky note. 2.Post sticky notes on the windowpane. 3.Discuss which learning skill is currently being implemented well, and which one might need “more attention”.

Implementation Ideas… 1. Smart Searching Strategies 2. Flash Cards Using i-Pod 3.Comic Creators

Closing Connections- CHIME IN!  Reflect on where each activity presented today fits in the ICT Literacy Map Smart Searching Strategies Comic Creators Flash Cards Using i-Pod

Follow-Up Math Session  Integrating 21st Century Skills into the Math Curriculum  Date: April 1 st --register at www.esu3.orgwww.esu3.org  Focusing on the content area of math, participants will connect with the K-12 scope and sequence literacy map for mathematics from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills with the current math standards. Ideas and activities for integrating 21st Century Skills into the math curriculum will be shared.  Participants will work through four math activities that address the 21st Century Skills

Please contact us at ESU #3 if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions… Pam Krambeck 402-597-4876 pkrambeck@esu3.org THANK YOU!! Debbie Schraeder 402-597-4865 dschraeder@esu3.org

Most of today’s students spend more time using computers at home than they do at school. A majority of children will come already possessing an impressive array of digital technology related skills. Taken together, we need to re-think the nature and content of ICT. Using ICT will engage students to learn and achieve at much higher levels.
