Common Core Mathematics Workshop for Parents

Why Parent Education?  Parent education is essential to a school’s success as well as the child’s success.  Test score data proves that parent education works. If a parent is educated, then there is more of a chance that the child will be ultimately successful as well.  Parent education is beneficial because we help their children everyday so how can they help us? Parents who are educated and are able to work one- on-one with their children are benefiting us, as educators, because they essentially help us do our job.

Why Common Core Mathematics Parent Education Workshop?  Have you ever thought to yourself “Why does this student never complete her homework?” or “Why does he still not understand multiplication after all of these interventions?”  Well here is a solution to all of our common core problems!

Cont.  As you’ve probably seen floating around social media, there was a dad who wanted to “stand up” for his daughter by writing a check to the school using common core mathematics. As most of you probably recognized, he completed it wrong. Additionally, he was mocking common core mathematics because of the “When I was in school, we just memorized our multiplication facts” mindset. It is often easy to agree with his mindset when it comes to common core math, but we have to remind ourselves of the end result. When students learn common core mathematics from Kindergarten through 12th grade, there are significant increases in test scores and overall understanding of the content instead of just memorization. Common Core math is extremely beneficial for any student because it provides a step-by-step procedural process for students and allows them to answer the “why?” question.

Common Core Math is not the enemy!  This workshop is designed to provide parents with a deeper understanding of common core math. Like the previously mentioned dad, several adults have a sour opinion about common core because “It’s not the way I was taught to do it.”  It is our job to prove to parents that common core is not the enemy!  When parents understand the value of common core, schools will see a significant increase in test scores.

So what can we do to educate our parents?  As you read in the welcome letter as well as the guiding questions, you will notice that each school needs are different.  This workshop will be designed by the adults that are presenting.  Ultimately, the design should meet the needs of your school and students.  By answering the guiding questions, the colleagues will determine which standards and strategies should be focused on throughout these sessions.

Collaboration is Key  Collaboration among grade levels 3-5 is essential for this workshop to be successful. Determine the needs across grade levels and determine strategies that will be beneficial for all students.

Data  Determine how you will assess students to determine if this workshop is successful.  Is the student showing evidence of parent/student collaboration?  Are the parents showing an understanding of the standards and strategies that are being presented?  Do the test scores reflect student understanding?

Surveys and Websites  Please complete the following survey to explain your thoughts and ideas about this workshop.  Common Core Math Parent Education Survey Common Core Math Parent Education Survey  Check out this link that explains reasoning for common core mathematics.
