1 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 12 December 11 th, 2015 Science Next Week Science Weekly Review This week the students worked on researching their severe weather topics. Once they had all of the required information they began working on their Power Point presentations. This took a little longer than originally planned so the students were not ready to present the projects. This will happen on Monday the 14th. Important As of January 4 th, 2016 students will no longer be allowed to carry bag packs. This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to get last minute holiday shopping done and give students time for their own holiday event with their classmates. This event will give your child the option of watching: “ELF” or “Santa Claus” The PTO will be providing popcorn and a holiday cookie table for students to have the opportunity to decorate and enjoy. Where: Addison Middle School Cafeteria When: December 18 th Cost: $1.00 or a canned good Admission will be donated to the Act-n-Do Red Cross Club will be collecting hats and gloves again this holiday season (Nov. 20 th - Dec. 19 th ) to contribute to the Council of Churches food basket giveaway before Christmas. 12/14 Students will grade themselves using their rubrics and will present their severe weather projects to the class. 12/15 The students will finish presenting and will answer Focus Question 2: Why do we study weather? 12/16 The students will write the weather and will look at tools that a meteorologists use to forecast weather. 12/17 The students will graph the high and low temperatures from last week and from the same week last year. Students will compare the data. 12/18 Students will write claims and evidence answering the Big Question: What are the measurable causes of weather and how does weather impact our world?

2 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review This week students were asked to think logically about multiplicative arithmetic. They applied their knowledge of odd and even number properties and divisibility rules to find factors and multiples of given numbers. Students also were asked to extend this application to consider common factors and multiples and find the greatest common factors (GCF) and least common multiples (LCM). 6.NS.4 Students ended the week by reviewing for their End of Module 2 Test that was taken on Thursday and Friday. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The first AR book and quiz will be due on December 15 th, 2015. This past week students finished The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. After completing the end of novel AR test, students began gathering ideas for their own Hero’s Journey narrative. Students are writing a narrative text about real or imagined experiences using relevant details and organized event sequences. ELA Next Week Next week students will finish Module #1. Students will incorporate different themes and stages of The Hero’s Journey into their own Hero’s Journey narrative. They will form a hypothesis of why the city Mohenjo-Daro vanished and present their position. Next Tuesday will be my last day in the classroom until after the break. Students will be expected to continue with their exploration of the Indus River Valley and as always to be respectful of the substitute. Have a great holiday season! Social Studies With Ms. Hall This Week This week students researched an Egyptian god and created a poster with their picture and 4 facts relating to them. Students finished working an interactive workbook for Egypt. Students were handed out a review sheet to prepare them for the test on Tuesday, 12/15/15. Core 4 students began their planning of their mummy and sarcophagus which needs to be completed by 1/27/16. This project requires in class and at home work.
