Easy and safe access and flow of goods and people, on land and sea, is essential for maintaining relations and enhancing regional trade. 3. TRANS-MAGHREB MOTORWAY: BACKGROUND In 1990, the Arab Maghreb Union defined the motorway for the Maghreb Union and qualified it as a project of paramount importance for the region. This motorway is part of the 5+5 Group’s Transport Multimodal Network and in 2009, at the sixth 5+5 Transport Ministerial Conference, a decision was made to intensify efforts to complete the missing links in this motorway. The Motorway is part of the Trans-Mediterranean Transport Network (TMN-T) which is defined within the Euro-med Transport Forum. The Motorway is part of the Multimodal Transport Network defined by the Arab League. Given its regional in nature, it fits well into the UfM transport initiative. Moreover, the construction of coastal motorways is part of our mandate as indicated in the Paris Declaration. THE PROMOTER The project has been presented as a 5+5 GTMO (Transport Group of the Western Mediterranean) proposal by the Centre for Transportation Studies for the Western Mediterranean (CETMO) in its capacity of Technical Secretariat of 5+5 GTMO. The project proposal is supported by the Moroccan Ministry of Equipment and Transport, the Algerian Ministry of Transport and the Tunisian Ministry of Equipment. 510/02/2012UfM Senior Officials Meeting, Brussels

6. DURATION The expected duration of the execution of the Moroccan section from Oujda to the Algerian border (22 km) is 2 years. Work on the Tunisian section from Bou Salem to the Algerian border (80 km) is estimated to last 3 years. 610/02/2012UfM Senior Officials Meeting, Brussels

7. WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED OUTCOMES?
