6
Why should I care about copyright?
7
It is the law. U. S. Copyright Law U. S. Copyright Law Fair Use Guidelines Fair Use Guidelines
8
It is part of the curriculum. Oklahoma Priority Academic Student Skills: Instructional Technology Standard 8: Standard 8: The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology. Section 2: Section 2: The student understands copyright issues and adheres to copyright laws.
9
Other reasons: It is ethical. Others look to me to model respect for others’ possessions. I am responsible for educating others about copyright information. I might create something of worth that I don’t want everyone to copy!
10
What is the problem? Ignorance of the law Teachers do not learn copyright information from the right sources Misinterpretation of Fair Use policies
11
What happens then? Teachers ignore what they don’t comprehend. Teachers over-comply with the law and overlook fair use policies thereby using less effective teaching materials. Teachers disregard the law. (Hobbs, Jaszi & Aufderheide, 2007)
