2 TN State Standard 5.o1-Understand the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War.  Lesson Objective: Students will be able to identify the sectional differences between the North and South that led to the Civil War.

3 What is Civil War? A civil war is a war between different groups of people who belong to the same country. It lasted from 1861-1865, triggered by the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860.

4 The Conflict The conflict between the North (The Yankees) and the South (The Rebels) started because of their different ways of living. America began the conflict that would take the lives of more than 620,000 of its citizens and injure more than 375, 000.

5 Ways of life: North Factories, favored taxes that protected them from foreign competition, money not plentiful but developing. Freedom from slaves, urban society, people held jobs Strong central government

6 Ways of life: South Large plantations, opposed taxes that would raise prices and hurt sales to New England States Prospered from farming tobacco and cotton, depended on slavery State’s rights were important

7 States That Seceded

8 Border States Remained loyal to the Union  Delaware  Kentucky  Maryland  Missouri
