SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WORDS 10-15
2
10. Symbiosis- A relationship in which two species exist together and at least one of the species benefits from the interaction There are three types of symbiotic relationships: mutualism, commensalism and parasitism
3
TREE MAP OF SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS:
4
11. MUTUALISM- A relationship between organisms in which both species benefit from the interaction Occurs in animals of different species Key words: both benefit
5
EXAMPLE OF MUTUALISM: A sea anemone and a clown fish
The sea anemone benefits because the clown fish attracts other fish and the clown fish benefits because it gets protection
6
12. COMMENSALISM- A relationship between organisms in which one species benefits and the other species neither benefits nor is harmed by the interaction Key words: one benefits, one unaffected
7
EXAMPLE OF COMMENSALISM:
A shark and a remora The remora benefits because it gets pieces of leftover food and the shark is unaffected
8
13. PARASITISM- A relationship between organisms in which one species benefits and the other is harmed by the interaction Key words: one benefits, one is harmed
9
MORE EXAMPLES OF PARASITISM:
A human with lice The lice benefits because it gets food and a place to live on the human. The human is harmed A cat and roundworm is another example. Who benefits? Who’s harmed?
10
14. PARASITE- An organism that lives off the energy of other living things The “bad guy” in parasitism The flea is a parasite
11
MORE EXAMPLES OF A PARASITE:
The roundworm is a parasite in the example of a cat and a roundworm Lice is the parasite in the human and lice example of parasitism
12
15. HOST- An organism that a parasite lives in or gets nourishment from The “good guy” in the examples of parasitism
13
EXAMPLES OF HOSTS: The human in the human and lice example
