This day in History : August 19, 1812- The USS Constitution earns its nickname Old Ironsides during a naval battle during the War of 1812. August 19, 1934- Adolf Hitler becomes president of Germany. August 19, 1946- Bill Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas as William Jefferson Blythe III. His father died in a car accident before he was born so he took the last name of his stepfather, Roger Clinton.

2. Native American Cultures

4. Puebloans Lived in the Southwest United States. Used irrigation techniques to grow crops like maize, beans, and squash. Lived in pueblos made of heavy clay called adobe. By the 1300s the Puebloans began abandoning their villages.

7. Hopewell and Mississippian These two societies were farming communities in the Ohio River Valley. These societies built large mounds to honor their dead. Cahokia was a major city in modern-day Illinois that may have been home to 20,000 Mississippians.

9. Arctic and Subarctic Indians The Inuit and Aleut lived in harsh conditions. Lived in igloos, hide tents, and huts. Hunted and fished for large mammals including whale. Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest would carve images on totem poles.

14. Western Indians In the California area there were a great deal of food sources so farming was not necessary. Acorns were a key food source. They also hunted for deer and fished.

18. Eastern Indians Lived on farming communities. In the Northeast the Iroquois League was a confederation of tribes who waged war together. This was rare among Native Americans.
