GE in Business

Google Earth in Geography ➲ A lot of teachers find ArcView GIS very difficult ➲ Most students are familiar with Google Earth ➲ GE is easy to use and is visually appealing ➲ Can be used in a wide variety of courses

Google Earth and World Issues
10
Example: Travel & Tourism
12
Example: Weather and Climate
13
Example: Plate tectonics
15
Example: Planning a Field Trip
16
For example... teaching lat. & long. ➲ Make sure the Geographic web box is unchecked to avoid clutter ➲ In the “Find” box in Google Earth, type 29 58 31N, 31 08 16E Where did you end up? Your turn... find a famous place and give us the coordinates to find it.
18
Using GPS units with GE ➲ Becoming ubiquitous in our society, even in Japanese coats to track children ➲ Myriad of academic activities with GPS units ➲ More and more schools are purchasing units for geography and Outdoor Education ➲ Pilot program @ WCSS
19
Interfacing GPS and GE... an example ➲ Mark a waypoint called Start ➲ Have students walk 0 degrees north (true) for about 150 metres ➲ Switch the GPS to 0 degrees, magnetic north ➲ Import the tracks into Google Earth. Zoom in and measure the degrees of distance between the two
21
Another example with a GPS ➲ Establish a waypoint on your GPS in western Canada. Project to a waypoint on a path of magnetic north. ➲ Bring these two vectors into Google Earth and see where the magnetic pole lies.
22
Finding the magnetic North Pole
23
And just for the fun of it, write your name in the school yard
