2 English 10: Do Now 4/22/13  Does knowledge come at a price? Can gaining knowledge have negative consequences?  It’s an abstract question, so perhaps try thinking of examples in real life or pop culture where people learned something they thought they wanted to know. (Flowers for Algernon, Homer Simpson when he gets a crayon stuck in his brain, wanting to know the truth about a boyfriend, girlfriend, etc.)

3 By the Waters of Babylon: Stuff to Know  First Person Point of View  Naïve Narrator  Inference  Title allusion to Psalm 137  Read with a purpose: LOOK FOR REASONS THAT DROVE JOHN TO SEEK KNOWLEDGE  HW: finish reading through page 316 ESSAY DUE NEXT CLASS!!

4 English 10 DO NOW: 4/24/13  Summarize the story so far (Main points) in complete sentences  After responding, turn in your typed reflective essay to US MAIL BIN  HW: finish the story and answer questions 1-4 pg 322

5 English 10 DO NOW: 4/25/13  Summarize the ending of the story  When done responding, turn in your homework (questions 1-4) to the US MAIL BIN

6 Thursday Homework: copy down these questions  What inference can you make from the fact that it is forbidden to go to the Place of the Gods?  How does John’s journey change his point of view? Give one example of something that John changes his mind about.  How do the readers of this story understand the events better than John? Give at least three examples of facts that the reader understands that John does not.

7 English 10: DO NOW 4/26/13  Staple your Do Nows together (if they are on separate sheets of paper) from this week (2 plus the reading check you already turned in). Make sure name, date, period is on every page you turn in (to the US MAIL BIN).  Have your homework questions on your desk: we will review them and then take a quiz over the story
