Definition of a Sentence 4 Every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with punctuation. 4 Sentences express a complete thought. 4 There are four types of sentences we use when we write: –Declarative –Interrogative –Imperative –Exclamatory

Declarative 4 A statement is a telling sentence. 4 A statement ends with a period (.). I am responsible for the choices I make.

Interrogative 4 A question is an asking sentence. 4 Questions end with a question mark (?). 4 Questions often begin with who, what, when, where, how, or why. J What time is it?

Imperative 4 A command is a sentence that gives an order. 4 Commands end with a period (.). 4 Commands can begin with “please” or an introduction word. J Please get out your pencil.

Exclamatory 4 An exclamation is an excited sentence. 4 Exclamations end with an exclamation point (!). 4 Exclamations can begin with question words, but don’t ask a question. J What a huge dog that is!
