Photosynthesis
2
Let’s talk about light!
3
Why do leaves change color? Pigments! Chlorophyll - Converts Red and blue light into chemical energy. Two types: Chlorophyll A and Chlorophyll B Carotenoids – Converts Red, Orange, and Yellow light to chemical energy.
4
What is Photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar.
5
Photosynthesis Equation
6
Where does it happen? Chloroplast- Battery factory of the cell. Contains chlorophyll. “Chloro”- means green "phyll”- means pigment Thylakoid- Where light reaction occurs. Grana- Stack of thylakoids. Stroma-where Dark part of photosynthesis occurs.
7
Where does it happen?
8
Photosynthesis in two parts. Part One- Light Reaction Part Two –Dark Reaction
9
Light Reaction
10
Light Reaction makes ATP and NADH
11
Dark Reaction aka Calvin Cycle Runs through twice! Makes two three carbon sugars that combine to make ONE glucose molecule.
