PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis What we know - Producers are organisms that produce their own food. Green plants are producers – they convert sunlight into energy (food). Autotrophs: Autotrophs: self-producers. Radiant Energy

Photosynthesis What we are learning today- Photosynthesis is a chemical reaction, where radiant energy from the sun reacts with water and carbon dioxide to form chemical energy. Radiant Energy is required for the chemical process to take place.

Carbon dioxide and water are the “ingredients” for photosynthesis, and sugar (glucose) is formed, along with oxygen. The plants use these products (glucose and Oxygen) to produce food and energy or will store them for later use. Carbon dioxide 6 CO 2 Water 6 H 2 O Radiant energy (sunlight) + Glucose C 6 H 12 O 6 Oxygen 6 O 2 +

Photosynthesis carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) Radiant (Light) energy water (H 2 O) organic (glucose) and oxygen (.A process that requires carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and uses Radiant (Light) energy and water (H 2 O) to produce organic (glucose) and oxygen ( O 2). Radiant Energy C 6 H 12 O 6 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + Radiant Energy  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 (Glucose) SUN (Photons)

Where does this all happen? To answer this first you must think –Which part of the plant is usually green? How does Carbon dioxide and water get into that plant part? How does Radiant energy get captured?

Plants Autotrophs:Autotrophs: self-producers. Location: 1.Leaves a.stoma b.guard cells Guard Cell Chloroplast Stoma

Stoma in a tomato leaf shown via colorized scanning electron microscope imagetomatoscanning electron microscope Stoma Guard Cell

Stomata (stoma) Poreswater gasesPores in a plant’s cuticle through which water and gases are exchanged between the plant and the atmosphere. Guard Cell Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) IN Oxygen (O 2 ) OUT

How do Stoma work? A. When guard cells are full of water they expand which cause the stoma to open B. When guard cells do not have water they shrink and the stoma is closed

Question: Why are plants green? Why are plants green?

Chloro phyll Molecules Chlorophyll pigments absorbingwavelengths blue-420 nmChlorophyll pigments (COLOR) absorb energy (photons) by absorbing certain wavelengths (blue-420 nm and red-660 nm are most important). Plantsgreen wavelengthreflectednot absorbedPlants are green because the green wavelength is reflected, not absorbed.

Absorption of Chlorophyll wavelength Absorption violet blue green yellow orange red

Question: During the fall, what causes the leaves to change colors?During the fall, what causes the leaves to change colors?

Fall Colors pigmentsIn addition to the chlorophyll pigments, there are other pigments present. green chlorophyll greatly reduced pigmentsDuring the fall, the green chlorophyll pigments are greatly reduced revealing the other pigments. Carotenoidsred yellowCarotenoids are pigments that are either red or yellow.
