4. Moor Park School. Demolition of modular buildings required. ➲ School obtained quote from an NFDC demolition contractor. ➲ Decided it was too expensive at £5000

5. Chose to use untrained bricklayers ➲ Quote was £2500 so school was saving £2500 ➲ Bricklayers had never done demolition before and no method statement was put in place.

6. Building collapsed trapping 5 men inside. ➲ One man dies from crush injuries. ➲ HSE prosecute Moor Park under Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act. ➲ School found guilty and fined £25000 plus £15000 prosecution costs.

7. The summary. ➲ Cost to do work with trained, competent operatives £5000 ➲ Cost to do work with untrained operatives £40000 plus one person dead, four deeply traumatised and many other lives changed for ever.

8.  WAS IT WORTH IT? NO ➲ Don't take the risk. ➲ Use trained and competent labour at all times.

9. Untrained labour & accidents UK statistics show that untrained labour were involved in over 75% of the demolition accidents in the last three years and that contractors employing that labour were generally submitting lower tender prices and depressing the market for quality demolition contractors.

10. CCDO Scheme. The National Demolition Training Group, via the CCDO scheme, and our own efforts in educating clients has led to a better trained workforce and that can only benefit the industry in the long term.

11. Training in Europe Training in demolition varies from country to country and it is now time for the European Demolition Association to look to standardise training across the EU to ensure that we have a cross border level of competency.

12. The Institute of Demolition Engineers The IDE decided at the last Council meeting to change the membership criteria to accept applications from EU and the Rest of the World and we are now able to offer a new route to IDE INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP

13. Conclusions. A fully trained and competent workforce saves money and lives. Don't take the chance as you may live to regret it. And others may die. Train & Gain.
