3 What is BYOx? BYOx describes a digital device ownership model where students or staff use their privately owned devices to access the network and information systems in an educational setting.

4 The ‘x’ in BYOx refers to: the device the software the applications the connectivity or carriage service.

5 Why BYOx? Information anytime and anywhere. Maximising opportunity for success in school and beyond.

6 A BYOx program promotes: Skills for 21st century Responsible digital citizenship Staff and students investigating, creating and communicating using information communication technologies (ICTs) operating with ICTs effectively and efficiently Engagement in learning.

7 Specific benefits may include: personalised learning improved collaboration greater choice and independence for students increased enthusiasm for lifelong learning seamless integration of technology between home and school 24/7 access to learning increased access to online instructional materials using technology as a part of every day life.

8 How will BYOx work at this school? Through Education QLD and Telstra a Cisco Concierge Box is installed on the school network to manage the program Student completes the BYOx Charter and submits to the Cashier with payment ($50.00) Student books time with Technician to connect their device to the network Up to three devices may be connected per student

9 Support at school Technical support will be available for the connection to the network and installation of school provided software. Support will not be available for hardware or other issues Teachers will be receiving additional support to ensure all classes have Learning Place or Ed Studio sites set up for students to access work and resources at home Staff will also be given additional access to ongoing PD to support the integration of BYOx into the classroom The school has upgraded the wi-fi network to provide access to every classroom

10 Equity School owned devices will still be available under the current Take Home Program for $100.00 per Year Additional devices will be available for borrowing by students during the day It is expected that a student will have an appropriate device in class when required by the teacher

11 Choice of Devices Recommended device is a laptop If your student is in a Junior class or does not take any IT/Media or Graphics classes any basic laptop with meet their needs at school If the student studies IT, Graphics or Media subjects an i5 processor or greater is recommended. A tablet will suffice for basic needs but consider a keyboard accessory A smart phone is not really suitable due to the small screen size

13 Software Microsoft Office 365 – 5 Licenses available free of charge Adobe Design Suite – Full suite available -$20.00 AutoCAD – Free installation supplied if in a Graphics Class Symantec AntiVirus – Version available to students for $9.95

14 Security: Access to the internet user authentication required (user name and password) ‘Galactic’ filtering allows filters to be applied at a very specific level. Schools are able to match appropriate web content to different year levels and users. school level access restrictions apply.

15 Student and parent responsibilities

16 Security: Access to the internet when not on the school’s network sole responsibility of parent/family. school filters do not apply when not on the school’s network. home access is determined by the parent/family. Devices with 3G/4G

17 Agreements Parents and students: read and sign the BYOx charter endorse the acceptable use agreement.

18 Device security, theft and damage Parents and students are responsible for device security, care and maintenance so need to consider factors such as: virus protection is mandatory for connection to the school’s network protective bag/case storage when not in use accidental damage insurance theft and loss insurance.

19 Warranty accidents happen warranty period? replacement device? battery life? who is responsible? workplace health and safety? Battery charging
