1 Competitive Foods in Schools USDA will implement the new competitive foods regulations July 1, 2014. Virginia also has separate competitive foods regulations currently in the regulatory process.

2  Most schools in Virginia are not currently meeting the nutritional Standards as outlined in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, especially when it comes to foods sold outside of the lunch room. Are Schools Currently Meeting Dietary Guidelines for Competitive Foods?

3  Be a grain that contains 50 percent or more from whole grain.  If not whole grain then the first ingredient must be a fruit, vegetable, dairy or protein.  Be a combination of food that contains at least ¼ cup of fruit and or vegetable.  If water is the first ingredient, the second ingredient must be one of the food items above.  Must contain 10 percent of calcium, potassium, vitamin D or dietary fiber. After July 1, 2016 this criteria because obsolete. What Nutrients Must a Food Have To Be Sold As a Competitive Food?

4  This applies to all foods sold in the school throughout the school day including:  School stores  Clubs  Athletic department  Vending Machines Who Does This Affect?

5  A lack of products to offer students and staff  It will take 18 months for a manufacturer to develop a product for distribution  The acceptability of new products What challenges will schools face to meet the new regulations?

6  Will the principals follow the new regulations?  Who will determine if the products meet the new regulations school wide?  Who is charged with enforcing the new regulations and ensure they are being followed at every school? What Barriers Do The Schools Face?

7  Consider centralized vending.  Provide list of products that meet the new regulations.  Provide a reference guide or calculating tool to determine product eligibility.  Develop administrative policies for how the regulations will be enforced and ramifications if the regulations are not met. What Should The State Do To Assist In The Implementation Process?
