It’s what the world’s made of.

What do you know about matter? Do you know the phases of matter? Solids Liquids Gasses Plasma

Solids hold their own shape have weight take up space

Liquids take the shape of their container have weight take up space

Gasses spread out to fill the entire space given have weight take up space

Plasma Similar to gas, but the particles are electrically charged Example = lightning Used in fluorescent light bulbs and Neon lights.

What would it take for matter to move from one state to another?

Energy determines the state!

Particles in Solids: Are packed tightly together Have very little energy

Particles in Liquids: Are loosely packed Have medium energy levels

Particles in Gasses: Move freely Have LOTS of energy

Particles in Plasma: Are electrically charged Have EXTREMELY high energy levels

Solid + Energy = ?

Liquid + Energy = ?

Physical change When matter changes state No new substance is formed

Examples Ice cream  melted ice cream Chocolate  melted chocolate Ice  water  water vapor

Chemical change When new matter is formed

Examples The metal of an old bike rusting Jewelry becomes tarnished Bread becomes toast Burning paper

Video – “The Properties of Matter” In your science notebook, list FIVE new things you learned from this video
