Snacks Have you ever heard someone say “Don’t eat snacks they will ruin your appetite”? The truth is kids need snacks. What is not good is snacking so much that you are not hungry at meals. It also depends what you snack on.

Snacks You should try to eat snacks from the 5 major food groups on the food guide pyramid. The 5 major groups are: Grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, and meat & beans. Can you name me some healthy snacks? You should limit snacks from the yellow group to just one a day.

Food Label Does anyone know what a food label is? A food label is on the outside of every carton, box, can, or package that you eat or drink from. There is some important information on these labels. We will now look at a couple of parts of the food label.

Food Label What is a serving size? A serving size is how many you should eat at one time. On this label what is the severing size? And what does that mean? That’s right!! It is ½ cup. This means you should only eat a ½ cup of food from this label.

Food Label What is a servings per container? This represents how many times you can get a serving size out of the package. We said a serving size was ½ cup and we can get 15 servings out of this package if we only eat a ½ cup.

Food Label This number represents the number of calories in a serving size, not the whole package. Your body needs calories for energy. Your body works better if it gets the calories it needs from healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Food Label This number shows the amount of sugar in a serving size. Sugar is usually listed in grams. To be healthy, you should not have too much sugar. There is also other things listed on food labels that are also important.

Portion Size A portion size is how much food you choose to eat at one time. We will learn a couple of examples of good portion sizes. Things to Help You Eat the Right Amount Measure the amount an place it on a paper towel or bowl. Eat slowly. Eat your regular meals on time, and only eat snacks when you are hungry. Make snacks count. Be sure they are healthy.
