CELT Students in crisis, teachers who care: Putting university resources to work for everyone Presented by: The Campus Assessment and Response Evaluation (CARE) Team CSU, Chico

Why are we here?

Today’s Objectives: Brush up on tips for managing crisis in and outside the classroom. Learn how the CARE team convenes and evaluates students in crisis. Learn what we can and cannot do when students are in crisis.

B.L.U.F.* *Bottom Line Up Front Peers/faculty are the first to see warning signs Intervention CAN prevent crisis, BUT Not all emotional responses are pathological The CARE Team can help you manage difficult/distressing students You have a right to request that a disruptive student leave your class Access support for yourself, too.

The Mission of the CARE Team Promote the safety and wellness of the Chico State campus community Address situations where students are displaying behaviors that are disruptive, threatening, or concerning in nature Address situations that potentially impede [the Student of Concern’s] own or other's ability to function successfully or safely.

Student Judicial Affairs Counseling & Wellness Center Student Health Service University Police Department Accessibility Resource Center University Housing & Food Services Case Management Academic Advising

What can CARE do for you? We can Develop a plan for assisting and/or managing a student of concern so you can get on with the work of teaching. We can’t Pull the student out of class without cause and/or due process Mandate treatment Communicate details about the student’s history or progress

Student Judicial Affairs (SJA) We can Help assess whether the student’s behavior is disruptive vs. distracting Determine if past behavioral concerns may be related or relevant Offer consultation about whether a behavioral incident report to SJA is warranted We can’t Pull the student out of class/remove the student from campus without due process Sanction the student to treatment as a part of the student discipline process Guarantee that every behavior rises to the level of a conduct violation Share all details/outcome of the discipline process with faculty and instructors

Counseling & Wellness (CWC) We can Assess behavior patterns Validate/normalize concerns Offer expertise re: presence of mental health concerns Suggest how to encourage the student to utilize CWC We can’t “Cold call” the student Break confidentiality (disclose utilization of CWC) Diagnose the student Mandate counseling

Student Health Service (SHS) We can Provide medical (including mental health) evaluation for students who are struggling Assist in coordination of care and return to school for students who have been hospitalized Provide free or very low cost health services We can’t Disclose details of medical treatment of a student Mandate that a student receive an evaluation or treatment Ensure (despite our best efforts) that a student will follow through on our treatment recommendations and/or referrals

University Police Department (UPD) We can Respond and assess whether a crime has occurred Respond and assess for an involuntary mental health commitment Respond and offer the person a ride to a mental health facility voluntarily Stand by to keep the peace while the professor asks the student to leave We can’t Remove a student from a class without a valid arrest or mental health commitment Involuntarily commit someone to a mental health facility Force a mental health facility to keep a person for any specific length of time Prevent a student from returning to class or being on campus (unless a valid SJA stay- away order or a criminal/civil restraining order exists)

Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) We can Help determine if student is eligible for ARC Offer tips for teaching/classroom management Provide accommodations in the classroom We can’t Disclose the details of a disability or medical condition "Fix" people/mandate treatment Ensure a student's success even with accommodations

University Housing & Food Service (UHFS) We can Have an RA or professional staff reach out to the student Encourage the student to seek out resources (even accompany the student to CWC, SHS, CADEC, etc.) Assess whether a Housing policy has been violated due to concerning behavior Assess whether a new Housing assignment would be beneficial We can’t Mandate that a student get help Remove a student from Housing without just cause and/or due process Change a student’s Housing arrangement without just cause and/or due process

Case Management (SHS) We can Collaborate with departments to provide “wrap around” services Utilize community based services and resources for students who have needs beyond Chico State’s scope Assist students who are hospitalized or being discharged from the hospital integrate back into the campus community We can’t Diagnose students with a mental or physical condition Discuss the details of an individual case with others who don’t have an educational need to know, or aren’t directly related to the case. Tell students what to do when they are struggling with an academic, personal or medical issue

Academic Advising Programs (AAP) We can Provide dates of students’ advising visits & pertinent information discussed Reach out to students and invite them into our office Send out Absence Notifications Initiate Withdrawals We can’t Disclose information discussed in CARE meetings Adjust a student’s academic record Help a student who doesn’t want help

How to refer to the CARE team Email Lauri Evans (levans@csuchico.edu)levans@csuchico.edu Please include: – Student’s name and ID (if possible) – Brief description of the disruptive/distressing behavior – Brief history of the behavior – Interventions that have not been successful to address the problematic behavior
