Example: a fire station burns down Definition: a contrast between what is expected and what actually happens Situational: something happens that we wouldn’t expect to happen Dramatic: the reader knows something the characters do not Verbal – what is said is different than what is meant
3
Verbal Irony Also called sarcasm or being sarcastic. Examples The locker room smells really good. Awesome! Another homework packet! A fireman afraid of fire A dentist with crooked teeth and a mouth full of cavities You have a six-foot tall friend who you call “Shorty”

Dramatic Irony When the reader understands more about the events of a story than a character. You know something that a character doesn’t. Example Tim’s parents are proud of the “A” he got on the test, but we know he cheated. Alex writes a love poem to Judy but we know that Judy loves Devin.

When the audience saw the movie, Titanic, they knew from history that the ship would sink. When the characters said lifeboats were not needed for an “unsinkable ship,” the audience recognized the irony, but the characters did not.
