Science Weekly Review 9/21 The students looked at, described, drew, and labeled the pendulum system. They created definitions for “system.” 9/22 The students made predictions on how many times they thought the pendulum would swing in 15 seconds. The students tested their hypothesis, collected data, and reported out. 9/23 The students identified and listed the variables that they thought would affect the number or cycles a pendulum would make in 15 seconds. They also came up with vocabulary terms and definitions that we have been using in class. 9/24 The students looked at the standard that we used for the pendulum. They wrote a question on how they think the release point will affect the number of swings a pendulum makes in a unit of time. The students then chose a new release position, experimented and collected data. 9/25 The students wrote a claim for the release point and came up with a question for how the mass of the bob will affect the number of swings a pendulum makes in a unit of time. The students then experimented, collected data and wrote a claim with evidence. Science Next Week Focus Question for the week: How does changing the mass, length, or release position of a pendulum affect the number of swings the pendulum completes in a unit of time? 9/28 Students will write a question on how the length of the string affects the number of swings. The students will then experiment, collect data and write a claim. 9/29 Students will reflect back on the experiment and will write a claim with evidence that answers the Focus Question. 9/30 The students will create a picture graph in their notebooks based on the pendulum’s length. 10/1 Students will look back at the pictographs that they created and will extract relationships from the data. They will define standard and controlled experiment in their notebooks. 10/2 Students will revisit the question on page 9 and will have the opportunity to make changes and explain their reasoning. The students will also read an experiment and demonstrate their understanding of variables by identifying the variables that need to be controlled. Social Studies With Ms. Hall This Week Students continued learning specific details of the climate zones found in the Eastern Hemisphere. They searched online for such things as: location, temperature, precipitation, animals that inhabit these areas and vegetation. Did you know that the subtropics can receive over 300 inches of water a year? Students took an in-depth look at the areas where early humans would have settled and had to determine which area they felt would be the most suited for us today. They wrote a persuasive paragraph to convince their classmates to settle there. Social Studies Next Week Next week students will create a poster to teach about the region they live in and present their posters to the rest of the class.

6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review 2 weeks of Ratios & Equivalent Ratios in the books! This week students learned how to solve some very tricky problems that dealt with finding equivalent ratios along with determining how to find the value of a ratios. It is so long tape diagrams, hello ratio tables!! Students are continuing to work hard both in class and outside of class, coming to me when they have questions! I love to see this! Keep up the hard work!! https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6-mathematics Volume 4 Issue 2 September 25 th, 2015 Take A Peek At Next Weeks Math! Monday 9.28 Lesson 12: From Ratio Tables to Double Number Lines Tuesday 9.29 Lesson 13: From Ratio Tables to Equations Using the Value of a Ratio Wednesday 9.30 Lesson 14: From Ratio Tables, Equations, & Double Number Line Diagrams to Plots on the Coordinate Plane Thursday 10.1 Lesson 15: A synthesis of Representations of Equivalent Ratio Collections Friday 10.2 Lesson 16: From Ratios to Rates ELA with Mr. Knowles *All students are required to read at least three AR books every marking period. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The first AR book and quiz is due on October 14, 2015. This past week students reviewed the Writing Traits for Ideas and Organization. Using these traits, we wrote letters to the 5 th grade with suggestions on how to make a smooth transition into the new middle school. Students also reviewed how to be model digital citizens in our technological world. Mrs. Tice visited our classroom from GST BOCES with a wonderful presentation. ELA Next Week Next week students will finish reviewing the writing traits. We will also begin Module #1, Unit 1. You can find Module #1 here: https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6- english-language-artshttps://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6- english-language-arts Fancy Looking Lockers!
