Spiritual Awakening Inspires Reform People can improve themselves & society ! 1.2 nd Great Awakening (1790s-1840s) a. Revive Christina faith in days-long Christian meetings b. church attendance from 1out of 6 to 1 out of 15 2. Unitarians & Transcendentalism a. Ralph Waldo Emerson form new religious group b. Truth can be discovered by observing nature & relating it to one’s own emotions & spiritual experience 3. African- American Churches a. So = use sermons as sources of inspiration & hope b. No = political, social, & cultural centers
