2 Take out your homework, pg. 291 from GUM book lessons 1- 3

3 Lesson 1 Complete subjects and complete predicates

4 1. I am taking guitar lessons.

5 2. My lessons are on Thursdays. 3. Some of the exercises are difficult.

6 4. I practice really hard. 5. My teacher doesn't know any new songs.

7 6. His favorite songs are from the 1980's. Rock on, Music Teacher! 7. Alternative music is my favorite.

8 8. I took my teacher a tape of my favorite song. 9. He figured out the chords.

9 10. Most of the chords were actually very simple. 11. I learned them with no trouble.

10 12. My love for the song made practicing fun. 13. We played it together last week.

11 14. My teacher liked the song a lot. 15. Our lessons are teaching him about today's music.

12 Lesson 2 Simple subjects and simple predicates

13 1. Hummus is a Middle Eastern dish.

14 2. My sister gave me the recipe. 3. Pour a can of garbanzo beans into a blender.

15 4. Some people call garbanzo beans chickpeas. 5. Squeeze one whole lemon over the beans.

16 6. I use even more lemon sometimes. 7. Add crushed garlic, olive oil, salt and tahini.

17 8. Tahini is a sesame seed paste. 9. The action of the blender squashes the beans.

18 10. Hummus on pita bread makes a great sandwich. 11. Slice the bread into two half circles.

19 12. Open the pita pocket carefully with your hand. 13. This bread breaks sometimes.

20 1 4. Put hummus, lettuce, tomato and anything else into the pocket. 15. Many people simply dip the pita into the hummus.

21 Lesson 3 Compound subjects and compound predicates

22 1. Marisa and Rachel play on a soccer team together.

23 2. Kelly, Ralph and I watched one of their games. 3. Rachel ran down the field and trapped the ball.

24 4. The goalie and a defensive player ran toward her. 5. Rachel saw Marisa and kicked the ball to her.

25 6. Marisa took a shot and scored a goal. 7. Ralph and Kelly cheered.

26 8. I put two fingers in my mouth and whistled. 9. We shouted and clapped for a long time.

27 10. Marisa, Rachel and I went out for a pizza after the game. 11. Rachel and I wanted pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms.

28 12. Marisa dislikes the mushrooms and suggested olives instead. 13. I went to the counter and ordered a large pizza.

29 14. Mushroom and pepperoni were on one half of the pizza. 15. The other half was for Marisa and had olives on it.

34 Lesson 4 Direct objects

35 1. An artist painted a mural in my neighborhood.

36 2. I watched her every afternoon. 3. First she sketched a plan.

37 4. She drew dancers at a carnival. 5. The artist chose bright colors at the paint store.

38 6. Then she mixed the colors together into new shades. 7. She built a scaffold next to the wall.

39 8. The scaffold raised her to the level of the mural. 9. The artist painted masks and feathers on the dancers.

40 10. One dancer in the mural carries a huge, colorful umbrella. 11. Another juggles flaming torches.

41 12. Some of the dancers resemble people in my neighborhood. 13. I recognized the face of my math teacher on the juggler.

42 14. One acrobat actually resembles me! 15. Everyone likes the new mural.

43 Lesson 5 Indirect objects

44 1. Charlie's uncle gave Charlie a ticket to a comic book convention.

45 2. Charlie's aunt gave them a ride to the convention center. 3. Inside, dealers offered collectors rare comic books.

46 4. Some collectors were paying dealers large sums for the best comics. 5. Charlie showed a dealer his prized old comic.

47 6. On the cover, the villian was giving a superhero a blast of supersonic cold rays. 7. The dealer offered Charlie a trade for another rare comic.

48 8. Charlie and his uncle gave the trade careful consideration. 9. They made the dealer an offer for two comics.

49 10. On the convention stage, a famous illustrator told the audience stories about his career. 11. The illustrator's friends had often given him ideas for comic book heroes.

50 12. An archaeologist friend had given him the inspiration for Dino-Woman. 13. She had told the illustrator many fascinating tales about dinosaurs.

51 14. The illustrator's talents had won him many awards. 15. Afterward, the illustrator drew Charlie a picture and then signed it.

52 Lesson 6 Predicate nouns and predicate adjectives

53 1. Th e rafflesia is a flower.

54 2. Its home is the rain forest. 3. These blossoms are huge.

55 4. Some blossoms are three feet wide. 5. They look beautiful.

56 6. The thick, heavy petals are dark red. 7. Rafflesias smell terrible, however.

57 8. The flower's scent is the smell of rotten meat. 9. But this scent smells wonderful to flies.

58 10. Flies are the main pollinators of this rare plant. 11. Rafflesias have become endangered.

59 1 2. Rain forest logging and slash-and-burn agriculture are the main threats to the flower's survival. 13. The rafflesia is still so little understood.

60 1 4. Scientists are hopeful about future studies of this plant. 15. The extinction of this plant would be a tragedy.

61 T oday we will continue with chapters 14-24 of I Am the Cheese. One again you will just need your packet, pencil and highlighter NOT the chromebook!!!
