1 About the Story: Ed is a penguin who lives on an island of ice.
One night the island cracks in half and Ed is separated from his friends. The little island drifts away. Ed learns to write messages in the snow of the island. Ed finally returns to see his friends.

4 About the Author: James Stevenson
James began writing and drawing when he was a child. He says that he was influenced by comics and movies. He says that drawing is more childlike. He likes to draw pictures that also tell a story. As you read the story try to see how his pictures tell part of the story.

One night the island cracks in half and Ed is separated from his friends. The little island drifts away. Ed learns to write messages in the snow of the island. Ed finally returns to see his friends.

7 Vocabulary: Penny the penguin climbed over a big pile of snow to get to the water. She caught a couple of fish for lunch. Penny divided the fish into two equal parts so she could give half to her friend Harry. She wrote a message to Harry, telling him to swim over for lunch. The she put it in a bottle and watched as it drifted across the water. Penny hoped that Harry was paying attention and would notice the bottle. What information from the paragraph helps you to understand the words that are bold.

If I give you half of my cookies, is my piece bigger? What are some ways that you can send a message? If you notice something, did you see it before?

9 Phonics: Poem A penguin went to visit my brother,
Then he asked to meet my mother, He stayed with me and read my letters, Ate my fish and wore my sweaters. He only left when he discovered That I had another brother.

10 “ER” Often adding “er” to the end of a verb will change the verb into a noun. She walks all of the time.  She is a walker. He plays soccer.  He is a soccer player. They work a lot.  They are workers. He is a worker at the factory.
