Lesson: Respiration
2
Respiration - The release of energy from food. ENERGY Aerobic respiration requires oxygen.
3
Our digestive system breaks down food so it can be transported in the blood to all our cells.
4
Our respiratory system supplies our cells with oxygen for respiration.
This helps us to get energy from food.
5
What are the products of aerobic respiration?
food + oxygen = ENERGY + water vapour + carbon dioxide
6
How could we show the products of aerobic respiration?
Water vapour Woodlice + cobalt chloride paper Carbon dioxide Woodlice + limewater Energy Peas and a thermometer Can you think of other ways to show these products?
7
Equation for aerobic respiration
food + oxygen energy + carbon dioxide + water vapour
8
Now, write down the equation for aerobic respiration.
carbon dioxide Now, write down the equation for aerobic respiration. energy food oxygen water vapour
9
We use our lungs to take oxygen into our bloodstream for respiration.
windpipe lung
10
We also use our lungs to excrete carbon dioxide.
windpipe Use the diagram of the lungs in your textbook to locate these structures. lung bronchus bronchiole air sac diaphragm
11
Gas exchange occurs in tiny air sacs.
Carbon dioxide Oxygen (from air) (into air) air sacs When we breathe in, oxygen moves from air sacs into our bloodstream. Carbon dioxide moves from our bloodstream into air sacs and is excreted out when we breathe out.
12
Smoking damages our lungs and slows down gas exchange.
Smoking causes: Bronchitis Lung cancer Heart strain
13
So say NO to cigarettes!
14
Review Question. Label each part. A B C D
15
Question to think about.
Is it a good idea to smoke during pregnancy?
