April 1998 – signed the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, United Nations, New York. October 2000 – announced Action Plan 2000 on Climate Change, Ottawa. November 2002 – released the Climate Change Plan, Ottawa. December 2002 – ratified the Kyoto Protocol. February 2005 – Kyoto Protocol entered into force. April 2005 – released Moving Forward on Climate Change: A Plan for Honouring Our Kyoto Commitment. Nov. 28 to Dec. 9, 2005 – Canada to host the Conference of Parties (COP11), Montréal, Québec.

EnvironmentEnvironnementCanada Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia September 5 – 7, 2005 - 3 - Kyoto Commitment A Plan for Honouring Our Kyoto Commitment a.k.a. “Project Green” was released on April 13, 2005 270 Mt GHG gap (~6%) Climate Fund: market-based institution to manage the purchase of emission reduction and removal credits on behalf of the Government of Canada: –Minimum $1 billion ($4-$5B estimated) –Potential for 75-115 Mt reductions for 2008-2012 Focus on activities where quantification methodology is well advanced e.g. landfill gas Offset System for GHGs: Papers for Consultation

EnvironmentEnvironnementCanada Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia September 5 – 7, 2005 - 4 - Kyoto Commitment PERRL Initiative Pilot Emission Removals, Reductions and Learnings (PERRL) Initiative has purchased reductions in four strategic areas: – LFG capture and combustion – CO 2 capture and geological storage – Renewable energy – Biological sequestration (Agriculture and Forestry) $13.75M over three purchase rounds (2002, 2004, and 2005) Provides economic incentive for immediate action in the reduction of GHG emissions Promotes better understanding of elements of emissions trading
