Chapter 9 - Lesson 2 5 th Century (400’s) onward: As the Roman empire weakened, Barbarian tribes (Germanic tribes) invaded and threatened the Empire. Barbarians were people who lacked education and culture. The western part of the empire collapsed and life became difficult because of these invasions. Pope Gregory the Great made treaties with the barbarians leaders and sent Christian missionaries to their homeland.

Chapter 9 - Lesson 2 Pope Gregory the Great: (540-604) Patron Saint of musicians, singers, students and teachers Re-energized the Church’s missionary work among the barbarian peoples of Northern Europe Established canon law to govern the Church Developed the Gregorian Sacramentary, a book that guides the celebration of the Mass and sacraments Established Church music, the Gregorian chant The barbarian and pagan invaders viewed the missionaries as kind and virtuous. They adopted Christianity, and by the year 1000 AD most of Europe was Christian.
