1 What does culture have to do with health care ?
Culture is learned and it effects beliefs about; health, wellness, illness, treatments, nutrition, food preferences, religious practice, births, deaths … Folk medicine vs. western medicine – take a pill for everything

Discuss how culture and religious differences and preferences may affect an individual’s lifestyle and health care choices. 2.Describe how culture affects a patient’s health history Nutrition, diets, hygiene, communication styles, beliefs regarding wellness, illness, medical therapies, birth and death.

3 …and why should I care? As health care providers we first need to understand who we are; our beliefs, prejudices, bias, etc.

Send in female health care workers when possible and include husband or male figure What is the best way to handle this when possible?

5 What if your patient is from a different culture doesn’t speak much or make eye contact?
We have a job to do so you have to get it done not call someone else.. Do you get another nurse who is of the same culture? Do you wait and come back later?

Whites within the state of NJ alone have different cultures. When I ask a student where they were born and they say Africa …I say Africa is a continent not a country. Within different regions of a country they often have cultural differences…. So what do you think?????
