Exploring the Solar System Mrs. Mahoney 5 th Grade

Project Goals Each group will research one object in our solar system. Each group will be responsible for a Power Point presentation Each group will also be responsible for a newsletter or a web page. A bibliography of sources used for information is required on all presentations.

Description Each pair of students within a group will be assigned a particular topic about our Solar System to research. Examples include: The Sun, Planets, Asteroids, Meteors, or Comets Sources available include your science book, print books, internet, and Encarta

Project Parts to be Completed Research about your group’s assigned topics Note cards with important facts recorded for future use for your presentations A bibliography listing all sources used 2 technology projects: a Power Point presentation, a web page or newsletter

First Slide: Introduction Type your title Type your name

Second Slide: General Information Your second slide will include general facts: Position in the solar system Size Distance from the sun

Third Slide On this slide you will describe how your planet got its name.

Fourth Slide: Exploration On this slide you will explain: Who discovered your planet? What spacecraft have visited the planet? What did they discover?

Fifth Slide: Composition On this slide give a detailed description of your planet – Atmosphere – Surface features and composition – Gravity How much would you weigh on your planet? Add a graph.

Sixth Slide: Movement On the sixth slide you will describe the way your planet moves: – Revolution/ Length of Year – Rotation/ Length of Day – What natural satellites orbit your planet?

Seventh Slide: Review Questions This slide will have review questions about your presentation that you will ask your audience. Make sure the answers are in your presentation!

Final Slide: References – On your last slide you will list all the sources you used Books Internet Encyclopedias
