International Union for Conservation of Nature U PDATED NBSAP OF J ORDAN NBSAP update does not represent the development of a new strategy document  Review of the existing NBSAP  Responding to internal and external changes  Ensure improved implementation and more effective achievement of set targets  Alignment with the global guidance on the NBSAPs

International Union for Conservation of Nature K EY STRATEGIC QUESTIONS ADDRESSED IN THE NBSAP 1.What are the lessons learned from the 2003 NBSAP implementation? 2.What are the practical biodiversity targets which can be achieved nationally by 2020? 3.What needs to be done to achieve the national targets and with what resources? 4.What can be achieved by the biodiversity-concerned stakeholders? 5.How can the updated NBSAP be aligned with national governance and strategies? The updated NBSAP will be a strategically aligned collation of key strategies and programs adopted by the main stakeholders, encapsulated within an effective governance system and aligned with the global biodiversity strategy and priorities.

International Union for Conservation of Nature A SIMPLIFIED STRUCTURE BUT MORE ALIGNED COMPARED TO THAT OF 2003 NBSAP The updated document includes:  Introduction on biodiversity and the need for conservation  Summary of the national setting: history, legislative, institutional  Revision on the status of Jordan’s biodiversity and its significance  Synthesis on the main factors influencing biodiversity  A long term vision statement inspired by the 2050 global vision  A set of strategic goals  A set of national strategic targets (aligned with the Aichi Targets)  A series of priority actions/operational objectives.  A specific section on the modality for implementation and monitoring  A set of target specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)  A five year action plan

International Union for Conservation of Nature U PDATED N ATIONAL S TRATEGIC G OALS 2020 I- Enhance the national governance of biodiversity as a main mechanism for national mainstreaming and integration. 7 National Targets II- Reduce the impacts of key pressures on biodiversity including habitat destruction, political conflicts, tourism and climate change. 7 National Targets III- Conserve and protect key ecosystems, species and genetic resources of Jordan at the in-situ and ex-situ levels. 6 National Targets IV- Enhance the national understanding of dry-land ecosystem benefits to national resilience, economic sustainability and local livelihoods. 3 National Targets V- Develop biodiversity knowledge as the main tool for cultural reform, informing policy and decision making support. 4 National Targets 5 National Strategic Goals including 27 National Targets Addressing all 5 Global Strategic Goals and 19 Aichi Targets 5 National Strategic Goals including 27 National Targets Addressing all 5 Global Strategic Goals and 19 Aichi Targets

International Union for Conservation of Nature C LIMATE C HANGE COMPONENT II- Reduce the impacts of key pressures on biodiversity including habitat destruction, political conflicts, tourism and climate change. 7 National Targets  Jordan is vulnerable to climate change: (i) increase in temperature of 1-2 degrees centigrade by 2030-2050; (ii) increase in evaporation accompanied by soil moisture reduction; (iii) diminished recharge of aquifers and oases, (iv) projected shrinkage of grasslands (which extend over 10% of Jordan); and (v) projected shift of semi-arid rangeland (which extend over 80% of Jordan) to become arid desert.  The national climate change policy 2013 represents a key milestone in the development of the national legislative frameworks related to climate change in general including the aspects related to biodiversity and ecosystems which are well-recognized in the policy document.  TNC report highlights the climate change impact on biodiversity and ecosystems and assesses the vulnerability of biodiversity and ecosystems sector in Jordan toward climate change and suggested adaptation measures in the form of best fit local and national projects.

International Union for Conservation of Nature I DENTIFIES SEVERAL CLIMATE CHANGE PRIORITIES, MAIN MEASURES AND INSTRUMENTS FOR THE BIODIVERSITY SECTOR  Design and manage Jordan’s protected areas in light of the emerging and increasing challenges related to climate change and global warming;  Introduce and strengthen eco-system based adaptation.  Research, monitor and address impacts of climate change on biodiversity. In particular, climate change sensitive environmental and socio economic monitoring and evaluation systems will be put in place parallel to Jordan’s protected areas planning;

International Union for Conservation of Nature I DENTIFIES SEVERAL CLIMATE CHANGE PRIORITIES, MAIN MEASURES AND INSTRUMENTS FOR THE BIODIVERSITY SECTOR  Address socioeconomic concerns resulting from climate change impacts on biodiversity;  Enhance climate change resilience of terrestrial ecosystems and their services and enhance the resilience of coastal and marine ecosystems and associated vulnerable species;  Support restoration of degraded forests, using diverse conservation areas governance forms, and building on the special conservation areas approach.  Raise awareness and mobilize stakeholders for conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services; and Promote a common working definition of sustainable land use and planning, and encourage public participation in land use policies and management.

International Union for Conservation of Nature J ORDAN S TRATEGIC G OAL ON ECOSYSTEMS SERVICES AND CLIMATE CHANGE : J ORDAN S TRATEGIC G OAL ON ECOSYSTEMS SERVICES AND CLIMATE CHANGE : Enhance the national understanding of dry-land ecosystem benefits to national resilience, economic sustainability and local livelihoods. This strategic goal pilot a national program on the ecosystems services and the response to climate change. It focuses on improving the understanding of the two relatively new topics to Jordan and proposes a series of actions testing ecosystems resilience, explores pilot phasing the adaptation to climate change, and the initiation of the program on the Nagoya protocol.
