2.   Email is a system of electronic communication that allows the user to exchange messages over the internet  Everyone’s email address is unique  Two parts: 1- the user name and 2 - the email server, separated by an @ Example: jdoe@gmail.com EMAIL

3.   Header – contains the information about the sender and a subject line (From, To, Cc, Subject line)  Body – where the message it typed  Signature – an optional part of email which allows you to give additional information about yourself (name, email address, phone number)  Attachments – allows you to attach a computer file to the message (document, picture) PARTS OF THE EMAIL

4.   Internet connection – Direct or Dial-up  Email account – Created when you sign up  Email software package – Web browser such as Internet Explorer (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail), or an email client (Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, Zimibra, Apple Mail).  Some are free, others are not REQUIREMENTS

5.   Once sent, your mail client talks to the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server. The server (storage area) will verify and accept your email  The mail is stored on the server for retrieval by a mail client (MUA) using Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), or the Post Office Protocol (POP). Your email client allows you to read and send your email. HOW IT WORKS
