1729 Ben Franklin founds Philadelphia’s first newspaper. Franklin also established the first library, the police force, the fire department and the first college university.

1735 Trail of John Peter Zenger. The Zenger trial is a remarkable story of a divided Colony, the beginning of a free press.

1739 Stone slave rebellion in Carolina. 30 colonist were killed. Then the colonist pasted the security law which meant colonist had to carry weapons to church.

1744 Eliza Lucas Pinckney successfully grows indigo. Southern plantations grew tobacco, rice, and indigo, which they sold to buyers in England and elsewhere in America.

1750 The colonies have 250,000 enslaved persons. The farms in the south were called plantations because the were so big. Many slaves in the north became craft makers or skilled workers.

1760 More Europeans arrive in the colonies. By 1770, more than 2 million people lived and worked in Great Britain’s 13 North America colonies. Colonist from all over Europe were welcomed in the Middle Colonies. Europeans who settled in the Middle Colonies include: Dutch, German Scottish, Irish, and English Immigrants.

1775 Philadelphia is the largest colonial city. In 1723 Philadelphia’s population was 10,000 By 1775 Philadelphia’s population grew to 35,000

1720-1765 The Colonial Economies Agriculture the business of farming. Industry all the businesses that make one kind of product or provide the same kind of service. Free Enterprise an economic system in which people can own property and businesses and are free to decide what to make, and how much to produce, and what price to charge.

1750-1770 Colonial Governments Assembly- a lawmaking body Legislation- the making or passing laws Delegate- a member of an elected assembly Laws had to be approved by the government and the delegates and burgesses.
