3 Define penny, nickel, dime, quarter and dollar bill. How much is each unit of currency worth, give an example of something you could buy with each. When counting up to find change you should start with the least valuable and count up so you don’t get to much change. Ex. If something cost $2.45 and you give the cashier $3.00 you would count back like this: Nickle = 2.50 Quarter = 2.75 Quarter = 3.00 1 nickle + 2 quarters = 51 cents

4 What change would you give, using the least number of coins and bills, for a purchase of $2.64 that is paid for with a $5.oo bill. (As a Class) Jess buys a notepad for $1.39. He gives Myra a $5.00 bill. How much change should Myra give jess. (With a partner) If lunch cost $ 4.19 and you give the cashier a $10 bill how much change should you receive? 9 Vocabulary Word: Round: to find the nearest value of a number based on a given place value. To round to a specific place value you have to look at the number to the right of that place value. Ex. 124 to the nearest hundred 124 underline the place value you are rounding. Now look at the number to the right of that place 124. If that number is 4 or smaller the number in the hundreds place stays the same. If the number is 5 or larger the number in the hundreds place goes up.

10 Key Points Always underline the place value you are rounding to. Go to the number to the right of that place value. If that number is 5 or greater the underline number goes up. Let’s Try: Round 674 to the nearest hundred. 489,039 to the nearest ten thousand. $7.13 to the nearest 10 cents. $13.21 to the nearest dollar.
