2 Whooping Cough Spread through direct contact with infected secretion IN OTHER WORDS spread by Coughing Sneezing Considered dangerous in infants NOT in adults  It affects the respiratory system

3 The Symptoms A “whooping” sound at the end of a coughing fit –(the whooping sound is more evident in children than adults and adolescences) OTHER SYMPTOMS Runny Nose Sneezing Low-grade Fever

4 Duration At least 2 weeks of the common cold symptoms Then 3 to 4 weeks of a severe cough = SIX OR MORE WEEKS OF BEING SICK!!

5 Victims It is most common in infants younger than 6 months old. –adults can get it to (although adults usually don’t have the trade mark “whooping” cough) Before there was a vaccine –5,000 to 10,000 people died in the U.S. every year

6 Children Under 2 Whooping cough is a lot more dangerous for children under two Infants less than three months old often don’t cough, they just stop breathing Whooping cough causes younger children to turn red or to throw up

7 Complications Pneumonia Convulsions Brain damage or death (pretty rare)

8 Prevention Vaccination: –Child has 5 shots before 6 th birthday for pertussis. Can take antibiotics to help prevent giving it away to anyone else
