2  You will complete a “literary folder” for the play  Each page will address a literary element or issue within in the play.  Each page must have page number in the upper right hand corner  You are responsible for keeping up with the notes and order of the pages.  Each page must contain text evidence, act and scene number with the explanation  Each page will go into a portfolio folder with a typed “Table of Contents”. Notes may be typed, but this is not mandatory; however, “Reflection” page must be typed  Portfolios will be due when you hand in the analysis essay and outline

3  Why do people from other countries immigrate to America?  When we talk about "The American Dream", what do we mean? What are some of the obstacles to achieving the American Dream?  Which groups of people have had trouble attaining "The American Dream"?  Given the obstacles that some Americans have to overcome, what makes the American Dream appealing?

4  Answer the following questions using poem and analysis  What central question does the poem ask?  What is Hughes' message about dreams deferred?  How do "dreams deferred" relate to the American Dream?

6  Characterization  How is the American Dream expressed in each member of the Younger family: Walter, Ruth, Lena (Mama), and Beneatha?  Describe each member of the Younger family. What type of man was Mr. Younger? What type of man is Walter? What types of women are Lena, Ruth, and Beneatha?  Define Static, Round, Flat, Dynamic character types. Which of the above named characters are static? Which characters are dynamic?  How do the supporting characters, George Murchinson and Joseph Assaigai, add to our understanding of the Younger family members?

10 Choose 1 of the following and respond in 500-1000 words. This page must be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font.  Describe your feelings about one of the characters and his/her quest for the American Dream.  Choose a quote from the play and explain why you think it was meaningful in demonstrating the quest for the American Dream  Describe how you would react if your were one of the characters who faced internal conflict regarding his/her quest for the American Dream
