RELATIONSHIP The wavelength and frequency of light are closely related. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength. Because all light waves move through a vacuum at the same speed, the number of wave crests passing by a given point in one second depends on the wavelength. That number, also known as the frequency, will be larger for a short-wavelength wave than for a long-wavelength wave.

QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED:  1) What was Herschel’s original purpose for performing his experiment? 2) What is the purpose of a control in an experiment? 3) Calculate the frequency of red light with a wavelength of 650 nm. 4) Calculate the frequency of blue light with a wavelength of 475 nm. 5) Using the equation, E = hf, where E = energy, h = Planck’s constant (6.626 x 10-34 Js), and f = frequency, calculate the energy for red light and blue light. 6) Which has a higher frequency, red light, or blue light?

ANSWERS  1) Herschel’s original purpose for performing his experiment is to determinant amount of heat in each color of visible light.  2) the purpose of a control in an experiment to compare to others in the experiment.  3) λν =c = 3x10^8/ 650x10^14Hz  4) 3x10^8/ 4.75x10^-7 = 6.3210^14Hz  5) 4.16x10^14 3.1x10^-19Js  6) blue light has the higher frequency.

CRITERIA  The presentation must be in an electronic format such as Prezi or PowerPoint.  The presentation must document a recreation of Herschels experiment.  The presentation must display data which supports the existence of infrared light.  The presentation must provide examples of calculations achieved by applying Planck’s constant and the speed of light to wavelength, frequency and the energy of light.

QUESTION  How will the amount of light affect the temperature of red and blue and beyond of the electric spectrum?  Dependent Variable: Temperature  Independent Variable: Colors

CONTINUED…  B. Herschel coated the bulbs of the thermometers he used with black powder. What was the purpose of this?  C. What factors do you need to consider as you decide how to recreate Herschel’s experiment?  D. Which thermometer showed the greatest difference in temperature?  E. Was is what you expected? Explain.  F. What problems did you encounter in your experimental design?  G. What changes could be made to improve the results?  H. Summarize the results from viewing the presentation yourself and sharing it with another group. Describe how well the presentation meets the criteria and constraints. List any suggestions or changes that you implemented after viewing and sharing the lab.  B. The color black attracts the sun light which absorbers the heat.  C. A sunny day  D. The red light  E. The red light being the hottest is not what we expected, because usually the beyond is the hottest point  F. The only problems we encounter in the experiment was when we had to keep the thermometers at an angle to stay on certain colors.  G. Changes such as a bigger prism and bigger box could improve the results.  H. As we were starting on the question for the lab we figured that the lab had to be conducted outside on a sunny day. Also the tips of each thermometer had to be painted black. The purpose for the black powder was to attract more sunlight towards it. Once we were ready to do our lab we went outside and we wrote down the temperatures for each thermometer before locating them on the colors we had to measure. After we placed the thermometers on the colors (red, blue and beyond red), we had to take measurements. We measured the temperatures every minute for ten minutes. The temperatures for blue and red increased as the time was increasing but for beyond red the temperatures weren't precise. We figured that the temperatures weren't as accurate since there were times where the sun would get blocked since trees were in the way. If we had another chance to redo the lab we would because the bow wasn't located in a goo spot to get sunlight.
