Causes of Genetic Disorders: Radiation or chemicals cause changes in the order of DNA “letters” -Mutated DNA can be inherited by the child (in the sperm or egg) -Damage can occur to the egg or sperm producing cells (ovaries or testes) -Damage can occur to the sperm or egg -Damage can occur to the embryo after conception

Types of DNA mutations: A genetic disorder can result when: A single gene is mutated Several genes are mutated, all working together One or more genes is missing An entire chromosome is missing There is an extra chromosome
