3. Objectives Students will be able to: increase an understanding of different cultures. increase an understanding of themselves and where their family comes from. explore the world using Google Earth.

NJ Common Core Standards 6.2.8.D.1.c Explain how discoveries are used to develop and enhance understanding of life 6.2.8.D.2.a Analyze the impact of religion and origins on daily life, government, and culture in various civilizations. 8.1.2.B.1 Illustrate and communicate original ideas and stories using digital tools and media rich resources

5. Materials Needed Computer/iPad Access to Google Earth Interview questions projector SMARTboard

6. Lesson Outline Discuss different cultures and where our ancestors are from Compile a list of the birthplaces of the students in the class. Record on poster paper. Using the list, utilize Google Earth to place mark the students’ birthplaces as a whole group activity. Show students the tour they have created. Save the data in a folder for possible retrieval at a later time.

7. Lesson Outline Inform students that the next phase of the project requires interviewing parents/grandparents to find where they were born and other information. Allow time for the students to draft questions they will use. Examples may be: Where were you born? What year was it? What were some of your favorite memories from childhood? What were some of your favorite foods from childhood? Students will use the information obtained to set place marks and add comments to their own Google Earth map.

8. Reflection/Extension Activity Students will write a summary that includes: What they learned from this activity about their family. What they learned from this activity about their peers’ families (1 or 2 students) What they thought about using Google Earth for this activity. Ideas for using Google Earth or another lesson or project. Example: Research and track the path of the of battles for the Civil War.
