What is a Property? A property is a characteristic that describes an object or a substance. All matter can be described based on its physical properties and its chemical properties.

Physical properties are characteristics that can be observed without changing the identity of the object or substance.

Examples of Physical Properties Include: Color Texture Hardness Density Flexibility Freezing Point Melting Point Boiling Point

Chemical properties are characteristics that can be observed as a result of a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction always results in a change to the substance that is reacted on.

Examples of Chemical Properties Include: Oxidation Flammability Heat of Combustion Reactivity Acidity or Alkalinity (pH) Toxicity Chemical Stability
