2  Connect the Dots  Procedure:  Begin the activity by telling everyone that you’d like to challenge their thinking. Pass out copies of the “Connect the Dots” handout and pencils. Ask them to try to complete the puzzle following the directions on the handout. When done before time is up, tell them to please turn their paper over. They are allowed three to five minutes to work on the problem. At the end of that time, they put down their pencils. Ask if anyone has found the solution. We will reveal the solution.  After solving state that:  To solve the problem, we had to get outside of our usual way of thinking and outside of the box we put ourselves in and literally draw outside the lines. This is what is required of us when we interact with people who are different from us or in a classroom where we have such diversity. We have to look at other ways of “thinking about thinking.” Drawing outside the lines is very difficult because we are so used to our own way of thinking and our own point of view that it is hard to see other points of view. To successfully interact with people from different backgrounds and different cultures, we must learn to look at the world from many points of view.

3  Diversity is… ◦ The differences among a group of people ◦ This includes…  Culture  This term refers to how a group of people perceives, believes, thinks and behaves  Race  Gender  Socioeconomic Status  Language  Religion

4  Students of all race and background are together in the same classroom.  This includes: ◦ Gender Bias  This can affect course selection, career choices, and class participation of male and female students. ◦ Students under the IDEA and of different levels of intelligences.  IDEA is an acronym standing for Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act  An Inclusion policy aims to keep students with disabilities in regular classrooms for the entire day.
