Geography: the study of where things are found on Earth’s surface and the reason for the location. – Human Geography: the study of where and why people and activities are located where they are (religion, cities, businesses) – Physical Geography: the study of where and why natural forces occur as they do (climates, landforms, types of vegetation)

9. North America

10. Some of the first people on our continent walked from Asia over a frozen land bridge in search of big animals. Others may have sailed on rafts.

11. South America

12. People migrated from North America to South America thousands of years ago. Others may have come by sea from Asia using islands as stepping stones.

13. Africa

14. Earth’s second largest continent. Africa is where the oldest signs of human life have been found. Millions of Africans were taken to the Americans in the transatlantic slave trade.

15. Europe

16. Called a continent even though it is not surrounded by water. Connected to Asia, and often called Eurasia. Millions of people left Europe and came to America for a better life.

17. Asia

18. Earth’s biggest continent is home to 2 out of every 3 people. China, India, and the Philippines sent many immigrants to North America.

19. Australia

20. An island continent with about 20,000 smaller islands form a watery wonderland in the Pacific Ocean. One of these island groups is our 50 th state—Hawaii.

21. Antarctica

22. This continent at the South Pole, is the only continent without human life, except for scientists who visit their temporarily.
