IEEE CS SAB, 8 Feb 2007 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 1 LTSC Update and Report on LETSI Activities Robby Robson Prepared for IEEE CS SAB, 7 Nov 2007 For Computer Society Internal Use Only

IEEE CS SAB, 8 Feb 2007 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 2 LTSC Current Activities LTSC is meeting 3rd week in Feb. Focusing on Competency standards (standards that enable skills, knowledge, abilities, etc. to be interoperably among enterprise systems.) Will reaffirm LOM 1484.12.1 and move forward with new versions as a new PAR to follow. Expect work from Aviation Industry CBT Committee and Schools Interoperability Framework Association to enter LTSC

IEEE CS SAB, 8 Feb 2007 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 3 Learning Technology Opportunity US Training & Education Industry Stats –2 nd largest industry behind Healthcare –Almost $1 Trillion per year –90% in pre-K through Higher Ed (formal education) –“e-learning” penetration: 2% in education, 20% - 40% in other segments. CAGR of 25% –Corporate e-learning industry: $6 Billion in 2006 to grow to $25 Billion in 2010 –2% of payroll is spent on training (!) THIS SPELLS “OPPORTUNITY” –Huge, growing industry with societal benefits –On the beginning of the standards curve

IEEE CS SAB, 8 Feb 2007 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 4 LETSI Principles Learning, Education and Training Systems Interoperability (LETSI) There are societal, economic and educational benefits to establishing a global interoperability framework for technology-enabled learning, education and training (LET). Technology-enabled LET encompasses many diverse and unique communities of practice and must accommodate this diversity and the financial realities of the various communities. A key to establishing a global LET interoperability framework is to define broadly applicable reference models The first successful and broadly applicable LET reference model is the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), which should become the first of many anticipated reference models in an evolving, overarching LET Interoperability Reference Model. It is necessary and desirable for organizations with a material interest in LET to collaborate and to coordinate their efforts http://adlcommunity.net/file.php/18/LETSI_Prospectus_20070201rev3.pdf

IEEE CS SAB, 8 Feb 2007 For Computer Society Internal Use Only 5 LETSI Current Status LETSI is moving forward quickly. It is being formed formally under ISTO with participation from Korea, a consortium of Central / South American states, SIFA, the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), the AICC, companies including Adobe Systems and Booz Allen, the Masie Consortium and others.
